Yesterday we went up to the National Park and looked for the world’s tallest trees. I later discovered that the tallest redwoods aren’t in the park but we did see some really tall trees.
Our campsite at the Emerald Forest in Trinidad,CA was very rustic. The night before about six raccoons came up to me when I was making a fire. They didn’t seem at all intimidated by me. There was also at least one bear in the park. The garbage can was lifted out of the wooden holder when I went to the bathrooms in the morning. I also heard a really scarey sound on the way back. It sounded like a repeating scream. I later looked up bear sounds online and I am positive it was the sound a baby bear makes when seperated from it’s mother.
Inside the Lady Bird Johnson Grove I am standing inside a tree that was damaged by a fire.
These trees were really big. Too tall to take very interesting photos. I guess the Seqouias are bigger by volume but these are the tallest. I enjoyed looking at them but the area reminded me too much of Return of the Jedi. I kept imagining one of those speeder bikes flying past me. Damn you George Lucas.
Jen next to a tree to show the height.
We saw only a few elks in the elk viewing area. They are in the distance in this photo.
This was the tallest one we saw at the park. I forget the name. They all had very similar names.
To give you an idea how big the tree was, this huge piece used to be a part of it.While we were looking at the tall tree I overheard a man in his sixties who was dressed like a cowboy. He sounded a bit like the drill sargent from Full Metal Jacket. He was talking to some younger people who may have been his relatives. He told them when he first moved to the area 21 years ago this piece fell off the tree on his birthday.
This is a view from the klamath river overlook.
Jen and I looked for whales. I think I saw one way off in the distance.
We did hear some sea lions down near the shore. We hiked down this really steep trail but could not get close enough to get a good look at them. I saw them in the binoculars but they were too small to make out well.
Later we walked on the beach. I think this is Trinidad State Beach.
Dixie seemed more hesitant than she had been on the lake in Michigan. Here she is pretending she is a trained dog.
Dixie and I “meditating”. Namaste.
Here we are reinacting Chariots of Fire.
